Rising band from Birmingham mix electro with indie with ska whilst
giving 2 fingers up to the missionary position. Ah, it's all good!
SSS Lara McCleary has a chat with bassist PBlade..
In 10 words or less, who exactly are Soixante Neuf?
Jason A>Vox/Guitars
PBlade>Bass/Moog/Strings
DT>Guitars
Warren Neill>Drums
Er....that might be more than 10 words oops!

Trying to describe your "sound" can be rough, but how exactly do you do it-- what is your style/sound/persona?
Our sound takes on many forms. We use 'angular' guitar rhythms with simple melodic basslines. This is blended with
heavy drumbeats to keep your feet stomping and last of the ingredients are string/moog/arpegs depending on each
track, to give the music a fuller flavour. We try to achieve a sound that captures a darkness/rawness but keeps the depth
in sound at the same time. Think Georgio Moroder meets David Cronenberg, Charles Bukowski, Jeff Lynn of ELO,
Jimmy Page and finally The Jam and The Clash all in one big musical pie!

If someone were to listen to you for the first time, what song do you recommend they start off with?
Hong Kong Vandals.

Gig you're most proud of? Dream gig? Nightmare gig? (or any combination)
Our first gig with our new line up was great... It was at The Others in North London, an arts and music show. We blew
people in to the next street. The worst was at the very same place! Several guitar strings were broken causing major
delays and Warren (drums) had just broken three toes!

What is the greatest compliment you envision the group could ever get, or has received?
A number one album/single (what does this mean nowadays?) or just to be remembered as a great band all over the
world.

What's your ultimate label to be on?
Domino I suppose. They seem to know a little bit about music...

Favourite part of the London music scene? Least favorite part?
Anything underground (not the tube!) Shoreditch, Camden, Soho and East End all have good and bad.. Camden and
Shoreditch can be a little pretentious but has a great scene nonetheless. Most of all there is such a great mix of raw
talent coming through now.

When/where is your next show, and what should everyone expect to see?
Our next show is Thursday 9th March @ Metro 19-23 Oxford St London W1 or if you miss that one we are at Ryan's at
181 Stoke Newington Church St for our monthly shindig with local bands - and this one is FREE entry. Expect the
unexpected...or just a great show

Finish the sentences:
'You know you've made it when...'
..Bono is kissing your ass.

'If we could play anywhere..'
It would be on the moon - well no-one else has! On earth it would have to be Glastonbury but any venue that's got a
great sound.

'I'll never forget the first time...'
'Ever I saw your face...(Roberta Flack) - amazing line! Probably when I heard Jason A play Hong Kong Vandals.

"Our band would can't live without...'
The sum of the parts. I suppose it is a sense of humour. We all work so hard that if you can't enjoy what your doing then
it is all a waste of time.

'We always..'
Win.

'We never...'
Lose.

Laura's view on 'Hong Kong Vandals':
Hong Kong Vandals-- Upbeat, clappy, snappy-- and as I wrote these words I realized I was literally snapping my fingers
as I listened along. It has that garage band roughness, but it's also cohesive; I can close my eyes and imagine what it
must be like to see Soixante Neuf performng this live, the band members playing off one another.  Mostly standard indie
riffs and sensibilities, peppered with new-wave synth. Overall it's evident they like this song, and hey, happiness is
infectious.
