RAISE YOUR FLAG FOR THE TRUE PREACHER OF FREE SPEECH: HENRY ROLLINS
People often wonder who Henry Rollins exactly is, some see him as the singer from the band “Black Flag”, whilst he is also held in high regard for his spoken word releases, he has also tried his hand at acting and writing poetry, all to certain degrees of success. 2006 marks the beginning of Henry Rollins very aptly named “ 25 years of Bullshit” spoken word tour, through the wonders of modern technology we lucky people here at Soma Soma Scene have managed to get a short exclusive interview with the man of many talents.
Dan Moore provided the questions and Mr Rollins gracefully supplied the answers.
What is your opinion of Bush? He fronts a very dangerous group of corporate gangsters. Either he doesn't see it or doesn't care. Either way, he and his cronies have made the world an increasingly unsafe environment.
'SANTA CLARA: Teen admits killing dad over poor grades. After fatal shooting, he set father's body on fire, police say.' What is your opinion on this latest horrific tale to come from suburban America? Well, it's obvious that withholding information causes frustration.
Do you feel that the plight of the West Memphis Three is a clear representation of Americas poor judicial system? America's justice system isn't bad. It needs work. Any system with humans at the helm will make mistakes. It's a clear representation of a horrible miscarriage of an otherwise good system.
Covering the entire length of your career to date, what is your proudest achievement? I'm not proud as music as I am just grateful. In this line of work, you are dependent on people paying attention to what you're doing. You say thank you a lot. I'm not really afforded pride. I am glad to still be able to tour and everything else.
Are there any modern day artists that you would like to collaborate with in the future? No. I am not much for collaborating. I can work with band members to get songs happening but past that, it's not easy for me to communicate with someone I don't know already and I would rather not. That's not to say that I don't admire a lot of people's work.
Given your numerous talents, why have you chosen to remain a spoken word artist for such a lengthy period of time? I don't think I have any talent really, just drive. The talking shows remain challenging year after year. Since it's a solo venture, it's always changing. I would hope to keep doing those shows for a long time.
Who are your heroes? Too many probably. Mark Twain, Henry Miller, Duke Ellington, Ian MacKaye, Muhammad Ali, Ahmed Shah Massoud, Miles Davis, a ton more. I get a lot of inspiration from other people and what they've been through and done.
Why should people come and see Henry Rollins live? That's for me to answer? That's like asking a rock why it's heavy!
